Tommy Docherty
(1972-77)

Tommy 'The Doc' Docherty took over the reigns at Old Trafford following the sacking of Frank O'Farrell and began a rebuilding job as the 1968 European Cup winning side retired.

The job was a long and hard one and United were actually relegated to Division Two at the end of the 1973-74 season.

But The Doc was undeterred and he took United straight back to the top flight, winning the Second Division championship playing an attacking style of football that the supporters loved. Not since the days of Busby had a United side had so much attacking flair.

The fans were convinced Docherty was the man to return the club to its glory days, but it never happened.

Less than two months after winning the Second Divsion Docherty was sacked.

An affair with physiotherapist's wife Mary Brown became public and United issued the following statement: "A meeting of the Directors has unanimously decided that Mr Docherty is in breach of the terms of his contract and his engagement is terminated forthwith".

The Doc went on to marry Mrs Brown and they have two children. His brand of football, however, was sorely missed by the Old Trafford faithful.
