John Anderson joined United as a sixteen year-old amateur in 1937. The first season of post-war football saw him win a Central League medal, and in 1948 he became the first post-war footballer to receive an F.A. Cup winners' medal in the season of his League debut.

His Wembley appearance in the F.A.Cup final against Blackpool was crowned by the final goal in Uniteds 4-2 win.
