Michael Appleton signed for Manchester United in July 1992 and turned professional two years later in July 1994.

Appleton had to wait until 1996 for his first team debut, against Swindon Town, in the third round of the League (Coca Cola) Cup.

Opportunities at Manchester United were limited and he spent his last few years at Old Trafford on loan to Lincoln City and Grimsby Town.

In the 1997 close season he was sold to Preston North End.
