Gary Bailey should made his United debut against Ipswich Town. His father (Roy) also a goalkeeper, made 300 Football League appearances.
Gary left his home in South Africa to journey to Old Trafford. He quickly established himself as first choice goalkeeper, appearing in a losing Wembley final at the end of his debut season.
His most memorable match was a bad result for United, losing 6-0 to Ipswich, but Bailey saved three penalties in the match.
He was successful in two in 1983 and 1985. A severe knee problem saw him leave Old Trafford in September 1987. He was eventually able to resume his career with Kaiser Chiefs.
