John Chapman (1921-26)
When John Chapman took charge of Manchester United in October 1921 the team was in serious decline. Chapman could not turn it around and in his first 15 games in charge United won only one.
Far from getting better as the season wore on United continued to freefall nder Chapman and in the 42 games of his first season they registered only eight victories and were relegated as last placed team of the First Division.
The first season in the Second Division began well but ended badly, United finishing fourth and missing out on promotion. Chapmans second season in the Second Division, however, finished far better, United gaining promotion back to the First Division by ending in second place.
The first season back in the top flight saw United finish ninth and reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup for only the second time. Ernest Mangnall returned to haunt the club as his Manchester City side defeated United 3-0 in the semi.
Shortly after the start of the following season, 1926-27, on the 8th October, Manchester United received the following telegram from the FA.
"For improper conduct in his position as Secretary-Manager of your Club Mr J. A. Chapman is suspended from taking any part in football or football management during the present season".
Quite what the improper conduct entailed has never been revealed and soon after the announcement United severed all links with Chapman.
