Lal Hilditch (1926-27)
Following the dismissal of John Chapman for 'improper conduct' one of his players, Clarence Hilditch, took up the role of player manager. Hilditch remains the only man to have held the joint position in the history of Manchester United and the first ever in the First Division.
In his 16 years with United Hilditch began as outside left before moving to half back with great success. When he took over as player-manager it was only until a replacement manager could be found.
In April 1927 United hired Herbert Bamlett and Hilditch resumed his role as player only, eventually retiring to coach the United Colts, United's youth side.
