Wilf McGuinness (1969-70)
A Manchester lad through and through, Wilf McGuinness began his career at Manchester United as player, moving on to coach and then manager.
He made his debut as a United player in 1955 at the age of 17, but at the early age of 22 he was forced to retire through injury.
Following his retirement McGuinness went in to coaching, taking charge of the United youth team in 1961. In addition to this, he assisted England as youth team coach, and later helped Alf Ramsey with the training of the 1966 World Cup squad.
In 1969 he was promoted from assistant trainer to chief coach. In August 1970 McGuinness took over as manager but results weren't good and in December of the same year he was demoted to reserve team coach as his predecessor Matt Busby took charge of team affairs for a second time.
In February 1971 a disillusioned Wilf McGuinness resigned from the club to take up a coaching role in Greece.
