Aston Sr signed for United as an amateur in January 1938 and turned professional two years later in December 1939.
After the War Aston was retained as a Manchester United player. He made his first team debut at home to Chelsea on 18 September 1946 as inside-forward, but was soon converted to full-back.
He was a member of United's F.A. Cup winning side in 1948 and collected a League Championship medal in 1952. In addition to this Aston won 17 full international caps for England.
His career ended in 1954 when he contracted tuberculosis. He later worked as a coach at Old Trafford.
